One more rustbucket returned to service. Jesus that thing is a big sonofabitch; and all the stuff I see on the net about them is "the #6 is too small to make an adequate jointer".

Apparently the definition of "wood plane" is somewhat interchangeable with "wood 747."

For a variety of reasons, it's generally a good idea for a plane to be as big and heavy as possible while still being of the appropriate size to get the job done. A #7 jointer is a little over 8 lbs and 22" by 2 3/8" of cast iron. My #6 is "merely" 7 3/4 lbs and 18" by 2 3/8". Even my smoothing plane is almost 4 lbs, and the semi-legendary English infill smoothers were more like 6-7.

When you're actually working with the plane, it's great. It's just lugging it around will tear your arm off.
