I just finished making a piece of rust [1] cut wood shavings so fine you can see through them.

1. Well, really it's a Stanley #5 jack plane. But it came to me pretty darned rusty, as you'd expect from something about twice as old as any of you.[2]
2. Yes, that means you too, Dave. I think it was made between 1925 and 1928.

Probably not, certainly not after I lapped the sole. For all the surface rust, everything there is pretty solid, and the iron was in decent enough condition considering. This plane has been used for most of its 80 years, but I don't think it's been abused.
