I think people would be much happier with O-Chem if they saw it as doing something useful, like making enormous blue photographic prints; but this would probably go against our modern system of education, insofar as it is both useful—in the sense that the knowledge can actually be applied—and frequently lethally toxic.
I now know a little about cyanotyping, and I even have a little understanding of why it works (although I’m not entirely clear on why one of the kits includes potassium dichromate). I don’t think I’m going to try any soon—lots of issues with intermediate steps to deal with—but it’s kind of neat.
I don’t think I’ll be satisfied until I learn everything.
