I picked up a book on photographic printing today. This turns out to have been a great idea because I've been gently toying with the idea of printing color images in my darkroom and said book talked me out of it.

When a black & white photographer has a negative that is very contrasty (say, Trees at UCSB or Near sunset at the Santa Paula Canyon), or very flat (say, Clouds over Goleta), they deal with this problem by changing the grade of the paper, so it will be able to accomodate the demands better.

When a color photographer has a negative that is very contrasty or very flat, they suffer.

This makes me feel a lot better about using my scanner.
