I received a traditional English style pigsticker mortising chisel today. It’s somewhat difficult to really convey my impressions of the thing in text, so have some photos instead.

This is my 3/8″ paring chisel that I’ve had for a while. Note the beveled edges and general slim nature.

This is a 1″ paring chisel of the same design, to give you an idea of how they scale up.

This is a 1/4″ firmer chisel I’ve repurposed for mortising, that’s on indefinite loan from my Dad. It is noticeably superior for mortising than my 1/4″ paring chisel.

And this is the 3/8″ pigsticker. It’s actually even bigger than it looks. Huge freaking monster chisel. Doesn’t fit in my chisel roll, because it's too awesomely big.

I haven’t had cause to use it yet, although I will soon, but all the reviews I have of the beast say it’s the best mortising chisel currently on the market, and every bit as good as the old mortising chisels of yore.

Heh, quite possibly. I see myself as amused in that last one because the chisel is so freaking big it makes me look like a 6 year old playing with Daddy’s tools. I can’t even wrap my fingers around the handle. I’d bring it to fighter practice to show you but knowing my luck UCSB police would call it a weapon.
